Aboriginal Culture

Taiwan is home to several aboriginal tribes, each with its own language, festivals, celebrations, lively music and colorful dress. Perhaps you have heard and enjoyed "Return to Innocence," the official theme of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, but did you know that it featured an Ami chant in its powerful chorus?

With 13 recognized distinct tribes, Aboriginal culture is diverse, offering plentiful fascination and excitement. And many aboriginal villages are set among the most spectacular natural surroundings on the island.

Year-round Festivals

The Yami tribe of Orchid Island celebrates the Flying Fish Festival from February to April every year. Tribes such as the Tsou, Atayal and Amis each hold harvest festivals in February, May, August and September, at which visitors can witness the aboriginals' age-old traditions, colorful costumes, dances and music.
